Artefact in the Central West

Artefact is pleased to extend expert heritage and environmental advice to clients in the Central West region of NSW and surrounding local government areas.

We have a deep understanding of the unique history of the area which sits on the traditional lands of the Wiradyuri people and its evolution from a colonial town with roots in grazing and gold mining to a thriving inland city with stunning built heritage.

Artefact has a wide-range of experience in archaeology, cultural heritage management and history across NSW. We work closely with Local Aboriginal Land Councils, Community representatives, Registered Aboriginal Parties, Traditional Owners and other stakeholders.

Our Bathurst office is staffed by Heritage Team Manager Steph Moore, Senior Heritage Consultant (Interpretation) Sabrina Roesner, and Heritage Consultant Juanita Kwok, with our in-house historian Dr Stephen Gapps having strong connections to Wiradyuri people through the publication of his book 'Gudyarra – The First Wiradyuri War of Resistance, The Bathurst War 1822-1824.'

Open for Business

We opened our office on Keppel Street with a gathering of business people, council members, Artefact staff, Community and members of local heritage organisations.

We were honoured to have Wiradyuri Elders Aunty Leanna, Uncle Bill and Uncle Jade welcome us to Country and offer a smoking ceremony.

At the event we announced plans to develop a practical training program for Aboriginal people who are interested in pursuing careers in the heritage industry and learning about heritage practices. The course is a partnership between Artefact Heritage and Environment and the Wiradyuri Traditional Owners Central West Aboriginal Corporation.

“The course is designed for members of Community who have traditional and local knowledge but not necessarily formal experience, training in the field, or an understanding of the legislative requirements that underpin professional heritage work. We hope the course might help to bridge this gap and provide additional career pathways for Aboriginal people of the Central West.”

Meet the Team

Archaeology

Steph Moore has worked in archaeology and heritage management for 8 years, predominantly in NSW. Her role is to undertake historical archaeological assessments and excavation programs, working with the team lead and technical directors to manage projects and mentoring junior staff.

She has a passion for Industrial Archaeology, particularly railway infrastructure, which she nurtures through her work on various professional associations. Steph is currently Secretary of the National Scientific Committee on Industrial Heritage (ICOMOS/TICCIH) and a General Member of the National Trust Industrial Heritage Committee.

“I am excited to have the opportunity to more closely explore the rich interlinked histories of the Central West. There are so many stories held in the landscapes, both natural and cultural, and I look forward to the opportunity to work with Community to tell those stories through our work."

Interpretation

Sabrina Rosener is a Senior Heritage Consultant in Artefact’s Interpretation Team, focusing on the preparation of Heritage Interpretation and Public Art strategies and plans, as well as the development of unique and tailored interpretive concepts, designs and solutions for places and objects of heritage significance.

She liaises with heritage specialists, Aboriginal and community stakeholders, artists, local and state government agencies, and corporate clients to enhance the public’s understanding and appreciation for heritage sites and to enable them to creatively explore the stories of heritage places through a range of engaging digital and physical media.

"Having spent the past 10 years living and working in the Blue Mountains and Lithgow, I am deeply passionate about this area and its distinct blend of cultural, environmental, and built heritage."

History

Dr Stephen Gapps is Artefact’s in-house historian and is committed to bringing the Frontier Wars (1788-1930) into broader public recognition as Australia’s First Wars.

He brings over 20 years’ experience in a wide range of areas and places of history – from sites of conflict and commemoration to riverways and sea lanes.

His award-winning book 'Gudyarra – The First Wiradyuri War of Resistance, The Bathurst War 1822-1824' was published by NewSouth in 2021.

"I understand the importance of the historians’ role in truth-telling and in fostering collaborative and shared understandings of the past.”

Insight

The latest member of the team is Dr Juanita Kwok who joins Artefact as a Heritage Consultant.

An expert in Chinese-Australian history in the Central West, Juanita brings over 20 years of experience to the team.

“It’s a great asset to Bathurst for Artefact to open an office in this city at the foot of Mt Panorama/Wahluu. As both a centre of Wiradyuri culture and the oldest European inland settlement in Australia, Bathurst is rich in history and heritage. I share Artefact’s passion for heritage and the environment and am delighted to join the team.”

Connections

Allyship

Artefact was proud to be an official sponsor and supporter of the Dhuluny Project in Bathurst (11-18 August 2024).

Dhuluny was a series of events commemorating the 200-year anniversary of the declaration of Martial Law on 14 August 1824 and the surrounding frontier wars.

"What happened in Bathurst in 1824 led to an unprecedented escalation of violence in Australian Frontier War history. The consequences to Wiradyuri people in the Bathurst region were widespread and devastating, and it is critical that we reflect on these shared histories that have been too often and for too long ignored."

Historian and Adjunct Lecturer at Charles Sturt University

"We’ve been fortunate to have worked on some really interesting projects in western NSW for a number of years so are looking forward to offering our clients the convenience of a local presence in the region. The feedback and support we’ve received so far from Community, business-owners and the local council has been wonderful and we’re really grateful to the people of Bathurst, Orange, Lithgow and surrounding areas for welcoming us.”
