WestConnex is one of the NSW Government’s key infrastructure projects which aims to ease congestion, create jobs, and connect communities.
The $7 billion WestConnex M4-M5 Link Mainline Tunnels project will deliver twin mainline motorway tunnels between the New M4 at Haberfield and the New M5 at St Peters.
To facilitate tunnelling for this major infrastructure project, it was necessary to demolish a potential heritage item, the former Bank of NSW building located at 164 Parramatta Road, Annandale which was constructed in 1937.

Artefact was engaged to manage the preservation of the heritage materials and communication of important stories that this building brought the Annadale community.
In 2018 Artefact undertook test excavations and monitored works at the Bank of NSW site in Annadale. Archaeological materials such as glass bottles, ceramics from kitchenware, a gold medallion, marbles, and bricks were found during test excavations, telling a long story of occupation at the site.
Artefact provided the client with a comprehensive Salvage Strategy recommending the adaptive re-use of heritage building materials and artefacts from the Bank of NSW building.
In accordance with this Salvage Strategy and the recommendations in the Sympathetic Re-use Report, the client donated fourteen of the large sandstone blocks from the bank’s façade to a local primary school. The heritage sandstone was used in playground landscaping by the school and currently serves as gathering-space seating for students.
Artefact then developed a range of media to accompany this donation. A series of student/teacher lesson plans were created and provided to the school, exploring topics related to the heritage of the building – including Sydney sandstone, archaeology, and the history of banking in NSW – and incorporating the artefacts found during monitoring and test excavations.
Artefact also designed an interpretive panel now installed in the playground, suitable for younger readers and able to withstand the playground environment.
The history of the Bank of NSW building continues to live on at the school, with stories and materials alike being preserved and effectively re-used.
“Artefact is proud to have been involved in such an important project that has delivered transport improvements as well as provided students with a taste of their local heritage."
