A good day out

City of Parramatta Council wanted to offer residents, workers and visitors improved public spaces and amenity in the Sydney suburb of Granville.

As part of an $8.7m upgrade Artefact was engaged to develop a Heritage Study of Good and Bridge streets and the surrounding area.

Our work was embraced by Council and was used as the basis for a plan for a heritage street upgrade. The history of Good Street and its role in the development of Granville provided a rich and diverse source of stories that could be told through heritage interpretation.

OUR
SOLUTION

Artefact developed the key interpretive stories, and historical content for a series of interpretive elements that were integrated into the street upgrades.

Stories included:

  • The Good People of Good Street – a focus on the occupants, shopkeepers and businesses of Good Street and their role in the historical development of the area, including the diverse histories of post-World War II migrant families and workers.
  • Becoming Good Street with sub-themes Out Dog-Trap Way (the early history of the area from bushland to suburb) and A Good Day Out (the changing variety of shops and businesses on Good Street over the last hundred years).

Working with design company BrandCulture Communications, Artefact developed a series of interpretive media to showcase these key stories including large wall features, interpretive panels, pavement inserts, and seating elements integrated throughout Good Street.

SUCCESS

The Good and Bridge Street upgrade was completed in early 2023.

The site heritage interpretation developed by Artefact identifies and celebrates the significance of Granville's historical architecture whilst creating a sense of place.

This project utilises the latest technologies to increase convenience, connectivity and safety, and update the look and feel of the streetscape.

The final result added a dynamic layer of local historical narrative to the shopping experience.

"The upgrades added more visual appeal, and have encouraged greater use of the area due to improved access.” - Community member
