Artefact was engaged by Arcadis to produce Archaeological and Built Heritage Assessments for a proposed new cycleway to the northern approach of the nationally heritage significant Sydney Harbour Bridge.
The NSW Government sought to upgrade the existing cycleway connection between the Sydney Harbour Bridge northern cycleway and the bike network at Milsons Point.
The proposed new linear cycleway not only seeks to improve the safety and accessibility for bike users and pedestrians, but also supports the future growth in the number of bike users travelling between the Lower North Shore, North Sydney CBD and Sydney CBD.
The project is part of improvements to the existing Sydney Harbour Bridge Cycleway that aim to make it easier for people to access and use the bridge.

The key objective of the assessments was to understand the nature of the cycleway proposal and its design, and to assess the impact of the proposed new cycleway on the heritage values of the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge.
A Statement of Heritage Impact was prepared as one concise report that combined both an assessment of built heritage as well as the archaeological impacts of the cycleway’s construction.
The report was informed by reviews of relevant documentation, onsite inspections and attendance at various project and stakeholder meetings.
The Statement of Heritage Impact carefully assessed the possible impacts of the new northern approach cycleway on the heritage values of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and provided clear recommendations and mitigation measures to guide the development of the cycleway.
Furthermore, our Archaeological Research Design report was a key component of the Section 60 works application.
“Any project that looks to change elements of a structure as iconic as the Sydney Harbour Bridge comes with a unique set of challenges. The work we carried out was complex and involved and was undertaken over many years. I’m happy the project offers an architectural solution which highlights the cultural values of the place.”
Dr Sandra Wallace,
Managing Director, Artefact
