Heritage matters in Penrith

Artefact was asked by Penrith City Council if we could provide Heritage Awareness training for 30 of their staff.

With a wealth of heritage assessment and management experience in the organisation, and a passion for all things heritage, we were able to tailor a course to suit their needs.

The course was delivered in person at the Penrith Civic Centre – a convenient location for council staff.

OUR
SOLUTION

Working with the client, we customised the format and content to maximise the reach and appeal for the staff attending – in this case 2 x 3 hour blocks of training.

As the course covered topics relating to both Aboriginal and Historical Heritage, we provided an Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Officer and a Senior Historical Archaeology Associate to deliver the training. It’s particularly important to us that when discussing protocols around Aboriginal Heritage, this is delivered by an Aboriginal person.

Both Artefact trainers have extensive practical experience, allowing them to adapt and respond to specific queries during the sessions, and provide real examples from their work in the field and on large-scale heritage projects.

We discussed relevant heritage legislation, heritage registers and reporting requirements as well as what to do should you encounter unexpected heritage items, including human remains.

SUCCESS

The course was delivered to the allocated timeframe, and was well received.

Throughout the course the trainers answered various questions from the floor offering further hints and tips.

Each attendee left with an e-booklet summarising the main points from the course.

“The workshops presented by two Artefact staff members provided a great overview of the importance of heritage and how to assess and manage heritage matters as part of Council’s operations.  The trainers were extremely knowledgeable and skilled in this area, which made for very interesting and beneficial workshops.”

Adrian Estreich,
Divisional Assurance & Security Operations Coordinator, Penrith City Council
